Are We a Society of Compulsive (White) Liars?

It might sound a bit depressing to read this statement, but it is certainly not a surprise. What can be shocking is knowing exactly how much of the time we spend chatting with people, we prefer to hide the truth or alter it to such extent that it becomes a lie. The real question is not whether we lie or not but rather, which is the impact of dishonesty and would we be better of these lies? For those who are very passionate about the truth, it might be difficult to accept this, but society couldn’t function without lies.

OmnimountEach day we have to decide whether to lie or to hurt the feelings of the people whom we interact with, not to mention the long explanations that would represent an alternative. Assuming you are visiting a friend’s house, and he asks you how do you like the furniture he just bought, with a big smile on his face. Maybe the first instinct would be to say that he made a terrible decision, and he should have asked for your advice before, as you could have suggested the omnimount products you are using.

By doing so you would not only hurt his feeling, but you wouldn’t help him in any way since the harm has been already being done. Instead, you can use a white lie and compliment him for his choice, while telling him incidentally what products you used for your own home. Some people call this diplomacy. Others prefer to reduce it to lie, but the truth is that the entire society is based on these tiny lies.
