Chinese Mothers are Superior – Have you Read that Line?

I believe a lot of moms have heard about the recent internet uproars triggered by an article posted in the WSJ.com. Anyway, I’m fond of reading the daily newspaper from Wall Street Journal and there was one article that truly piqued my attention because of its compelling title that goes ” Why Chinese Mothers are Superior”. I don’t think I am alone, or there are plenty of moms that also get irritated at the Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother media attention? Please don’t get me wrong, I’m only trying to know if there are any long-term advantages of “Old World Discipline.”

We seem to have progressed excellently around these parts – in such a measure that we easily give in to our kids’ requests, not applying any form of restraint. Are you still getting me wrong – perhaps you even added syrup on the pancakes you gave your kid?

Just few weeks back, my husband got me startled with his warning when he stepped into the house. Telling me that he read in their office bulletin that the force men are parading around posts to arrest those who are abusing their kids. In fact, you must not even yell at him in open places, or you’ll be put in trouble just doing that”.

What do you think about this? To what degree should cultural opinion or even public intervention intermingle with child rearing? Is it right that I get punished just by teaching my kid how to stay composed in a public place – I mean, merely slapping his hands? And why punish my husband for the discipline I meted out to my kid?

Now, back to the topic of raising a child; regardless of a woman’s social and educational status, a woman is lost completely and would be denied simple joys of life, if the kids are not properly raised. Perhaps you may think I’m sort of ignorant, that could be my reason for saying that a supposedly accomplished woman short of bringing up their children is doomed. Well, you are wrong. I also have outstanding educational attainments and career, but I would never allow these to come in-between me and my kid – I mean when it comes to raising him correctly.
